I found this on digg and it totally brought me back to when I was in college and came up with a similar idea except it was specifically tied to coupons. So that as you were grocery shopping you could scan the UPC and it would search a respository of coupons to see if there was a special for that item.
Photo recognition of objects is a technology that has many uses. A good example is 2 years ago at DEMO in San Diego I met a guy who had photo recognition for biz cards. After he took the photo the software would map the card and save it as a Vcard on his phone. Great way of digitizing contacts.
